About this event
An autumn festival held on the grounds of Jinushi Shrine in the Shimonashi district of Taira, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture (at Shunkoso Arena in case of rain), centered around singing and dancing to 'Mugiya Bushi,' which is said to have been sung by Heike clan refugees who exchanged their swords for straw and sickles when harvesting wheat. The dignified and stylish dances set to plaintive melodies captivate visitors. The 'Mugiya Odori' dance, performed wearing white tasuki sashes and hakama, carrying a sword at the waist, and holding a straw hat, features valiant choreography and skillful handling of the sugegasa sedge hats. After enjoying the stage performances, circle dances (wa-odori) centered around the audience seating area allow spectators to participate and enjoy together. Designated as a National Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property under 'Songs and Dances of Gokayama,' this event allows visitors to experience an autumn tradition that continues to be handed down in the Gokayama village today. Singing contests, workshops, and grand group dances (so-odori) are also conducted.
