About this event
Held every year in early September in Ataka Town, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the 'Ataka Festival' is a traditional festival praying for rich catches and safety. Large portable shrines and shrine lions parade through the town of Ataka, and a giant towed float (hikifune) carrying the Seven Lucky Gods and retaining traces of Kitamaebune cargo ships also appears. In the evening, unmarried women around the age of 20 wear red kimonos with traditional Japanese hairstyles (Nihongami) and perform a circle dance. A fireworks display is also held as the festival's finale, coloring the end of summer. This festival is a lively event that richly reflects the local history and culture.
