About this event
Why not compose a haiku while stepping into the mindset of Matsuo Basho, who loved Yamanaka Onsen? This convention consists of two parts: the National Submission Division and the Ginko Haiku Gathering (fieldwork gathering). In the National Submission Division, sets of 2 miscellaneous four-season haiku are accepted, with judging conducted by prominent selectors such as Mutsuo Takano, Kai Hasegawa, and Yo Yasuhara. The submission fee is 1,000 yen per set of 2 poems, and the application deadline is Wednesday, July 15, 2026 (postmarked on the day valid). The announcement and award ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during the Ginko Haiku Gathering. The Ginko Haiku Gathering will be held on the same day, with registration and opening of the Basho-do hall from 8:30, and the ginko session starting at 9:00. The haiku submission deadline is 11:00, the opening ceremony starts at 13:00, the special lecture starts at 13:15, reading and critiques start at 14:30, the award ceremony is at 14:45, and the closing ceremony is at 15:15. The venue is Yamanaka Onsen Basho no Yakata. In the special lecture, Tetsu Fujiwara, director of the Traditional Haiku Association of Japan, will give a talk titled "Haikai and Buddhist Dharma." The participation fee is 1,000 yen (including ginko submission fee and anthology), payable at registration on the day. To apply, please do so by Tuesday, September 15, 2026, by phone, mail, or by filling out the designated section of the National Submission Division form. The collection of winning works is scheduled to be published around November 2026.
