About this event
The Togi Hassaku Festival is a traditional festival held in Shika Town, Hakui District, Ishikawa Prefecture, taking place every year on the last Sunday of August and the day before. The festival originates from the legend of the meeting between a male deity and a female deity. On the first day, during the Otabi Festival, about 30 kiriko (giant lantern floats) parade to Togi Hachiman Shrine to welcome the portable shrine (mikoshi) carrying the male deity. The sight of the kiriko rushing up into the shrine precincts while parting the crowds lining both sides of the approach is a breathtaking spectacle, showcasing both the elegance of the floats and the valor of their bearers. After completing the rituals, the procession of kiriko heads toward the female deity at Sumiyoshi Shrine, traversing about 2 kilometers along night roads accompanied by the unique rhythms of drums and gongs. On the second day, during the Hon Matsuri (main festival), portable shrines take center stage as the mikoshi carrying the male deity and those from various local settlements gather at Masuho-ga-ura. It is a magnificent sight to see a line of about 10 mikoshi undertaking the Hama-mawari parade along the coastline of white sand and green pines. This festival is packed with highlights as a romantic celebration of the divine reunion, with the kiriko taking the lead on the first day and the mikoshi on the second day.
