COCONO Art Place Special Exhibition: FY2026 Municipal Art Museum Activation Project 24th Joint Traveling Exhibition 'Kubo Collection Held by Moka City, Tochigi: 30 Years After His Death - Who Was Sadajiro Kubo?'

About this event

This exhibition displays the Sadajiro Kubo Collection held by Moka City, Tochigi Prefecture, offering insight into the multifaceted life of Sadajiro Kubo as a collector, art critic, creative art educator, and patron. Sadajiro Kubo was born in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, married into the wealthy Kubo family in Moka City, and pursued a path in art following his encounter with Hideo Sugita (later known as Ei-Q). Rather than adults teaching art to children, he carried out various activities connecting art with society, including the 'Creative Art Education Movement' recognizing children's free expression, the 'Small Collector Movement' encouraging ordinary people to easily purchase artworks and become collectors, and support for artists. His collection of over 1,500 pieces gathered throughout his lifetime truly represents his life itself. In this exhibition, tracing his footsteps, the Kubo Collection is presented in four chapters, allowing visitors to learn about his multifaceted activities through the artworks and reflect on his character and legacy. During the exhibition period, events such as highlight commentary sessions by the curator, ex-libris bookplate making using woodblock prints, and a talk event discussing Sadajiro Kubo, Ono, and the Small Collector Movement will also be held.
