Mikata Ishi Kanzeon Grand Unveiling

The unveiling of Mikata Ishi Kanzeon, a hidden Buddha statue known as the "One-Handed Kannon" handed down in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture, will be held for a limited period of 5 days from October 16 to October 20, 2026. This rock-carved Buddha, said to have been sculpted overnight by Kobo Daishi, has a legend that he departed leaving the right wrist and beyond unfinished, and this is a precious opportunity unveiled only once every 33 years. During the unveiling period, opening-door services and prayer services will be held, and a children's procession (ochigo-san gyoretsu) is scheduled for October 18, allowing visitors to pray for children's healthy growth. In addition, the precincts feature Oteshido, where approximately 60,000 votive offerings shaped like hands and feet are piled up, preserving people's prayers and records of recovery in physical form.
