"Earth Day Wakasa Main Festival" is a citizen-driven movement practiced worldwide as a day to reflect and act on the global environment. Surrounded by the sea, mountains, and lakes, the Wakasa region has long thrived alongside the blessings of abundant water. This event is held as a space to reexamine our wisdom of living with nature and envision our future lifestyle together. In the ancient Jomon period, people lived in harmony with nature and within natural cycles. Hints for applying that spirit today still remain in Wakasa's climate and everyday life. At Earth Day Wakasa, we aim to provide time to awaken the environmental awareness dormant within each individual while experiencing the importance of water and connections with nature. Together with local residents, we will create a day to experience the feeling of humans connecting with nature, listen to the voice of the Earth, and gently reflect on what we can do now. The themes are "JYUNKAN – Living in Small Cycles," "JYUYOU – Accepting Through Knowing," and "JIMOTO – A Future Living with This Land." Planned activities include nature experiences, Jomon workshops, an eco-friendly market (reused goods, organic food, local vegetables), film screenings & talk sessions (climate change, social issues, lifestyle), sustainable craft and energy workshops, and a camping experience area (Jomon lifestyle experience). Always feeling the scent of the breeze, with the sea, mountains, rivers, and sky right beside us—we live within such rhythms of nature. Clear spring water flows so pure you can scoop and drink it directly, and rich natural materials thrive untouched in the forests and seas. The workings of nature teach us many things simply by existing. That was also a sensibility cherished by the people of the Jomon period. Humans are part of nature, living from the same perspective as nature—such a way of living quietly breathes on in Wakasa today. The memories preserved in archaeological remains and landscapes are sure to serve as hints to rethink our future way of living. Earth Day Wakasa is a day to listen to the voice of nature and feel once more the meaning of existing alongside this land. To know, to accept, and to connect. While it may be a small step, it will surely mark the beginning of a new cycle leading into the future.
