About this event
The Shibokusa Suwa Shrine Annual Festival is a rare village festival rooted in the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism handed down in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture. A large portable shrine known as the 'Shibokusa Abare Mikoshi' is carried mainly by men in their critical/unlucky ages (yakudoshi) and paraded while vigorously shaking it alongside spirited chanting. The 'Abare Mikoshi,' which in the past was so wild that it would push forward regardless of obstacles, damaging fences, stone walls, and vehicles, is the biggest highlight of the festival. The powerful sight of the portable shrine traveling back and forth between the shrine and the temporary resting site (otabisho) over two days captivates visitors. In addition, traditional performing arts such as lion dance kagura are also dedicated, making it a festival where visitors can experience the local culture and history.
