About this event
The "Shinshu Maruko Yoshinaka Festival" commemorating the site where Kiso Yoshinaka raised his army will be held in the Maruko area of Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. In this event, the once-every-four-years "Kiso Yoshinaka Raising an Army Samurai Procession" takes place, featuring about 100 warriors in full armor and helmets parading from Kamimaruko Shopping Street to Arai Shrine. Special guests Yasuhiro Ohno as Kiso Yoshinaka and Sayaka Akimoto as Tomoe Gozen will appear to liven up the festival. Kiso Yoshinaka was a samurai commander of the late Heian period who stayed in the Maruko area for about two and a half years and is believed to have made preparations to raise an army based at Yoda Castle. Due to this historical background, many historical sites associated with Yoshinaka remain in the Maruko area. This samurai procession will be a valuable opportunity to experience local history and culture.
