Held annually in early October in Matsukawa Town, Nagano Prefecture, the 'Bena Maeda Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival' is a traditional celebration of the autumn harvest. A major highlight of the festival is the thrilling 'Dai-sangoku' fireworks, where vigorous pillars of fire burst from bamboo cylinders. The sight of sparks showering at close range is breathtaking and enchants visitors. Additionally, traditional performing arts such as lion dances (shishimai) and variety entertainment are performed, allowing guests to experience community-rooted culture firsthand. Because nighttime temperatures drop, wearing thick outerwear and spark-resistant clothing (such as cotton) is recommended. Along with the seasonal fragrance of fruits in Matsukawa Town, this festival is one of the historic traditions passed down through generations, offering a rare opportunity to feel the local passion.
