National Haiku Tournament Commemorating the 200th Memorial Anniversary of Kobayashi Issa

A nationwide haiku tournament held at the Issa Memorial Museum on November 19, "Issa-ki," the memorial day of haiku poet Kobayashi Issa. In 2026, it will be held as a commemorative convention for the 200th anniversary of Issa's death. Selected works submitted from all over the country will be announced and awarded, bringing together contemporary haiku that inherit the spirit of Issa, who lived in his hometown and stayed close to ordinary people and small creatures. On the day of the tournament, the special exhibition "Issa in the Seventh Diary" will also be underway; visiting Issa's handwritten materials after taking in the tournament atmosphere allows for a deeper appreciation of the depths of Shinano Town, the village of haiku. In recent years, it has become a major event receiving over 4,700 poem submissions annually from across Japan.
