Fukuji Onsen Summer Festival

About this event

This is an annual summer event held in Fukuji Onsen, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. The lion dance 'Henbetori', designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the city, is performed every night. This lion dance is based on a legend that when Emperor Murakami visited incognito for hot-spring therapy, he soothed and defeated a venomous snake that had been tormenting the villagers with the sound of a flute. Accompanied by the flute melody, the unique and charming interaction between the lion and the snake is a must-see. An ema (votive wooden tablet) market is also held concurrently.
