About this event
Held annually on October 9 and 10 at Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, the "Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival)" is a traditional festival representing Hida Takayama alongside the Spring Takayama Festival. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage, this festival features gorgeous, dazzling festival floats and draws many tourists. The formal name of the festival is Hachiman Festival (Hachiman-sai), held as the annual festival of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, the guardian deity of the northern half of the old Takayama castle town. One of the highlights of the festival is the 11 magnificent floats (yatai/dashi). Some of these floats are mounted with intricate mechanical puppets (karakuri ningyo), whose complex and breathtaking movements captivate spectators. During the festival period, these beautiful floats parade through the town, allowing visitors to fully savor the traditional festival atmosphere.
