About this event
Held every year on August 22 at Renge-ji Temple in Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture, the "Renge-ji Jizo Bon" (officially named "Renge-ji Mizuko Kosodate Jizo Manto-e") is a day to hold memorial services for children who passed away at a young age and pray for the healthy growth of children. Around sunset, numerous lights are lit, and a solemn Buddhist memorial service following the mizuko memorial service is conducted amidst gentle light. Along with the sounds of Kuzuhara taiko drums, the sight of bright red Chinese lantern plant (hozuki) lanterns being lit one after another by hand-passing candles is magical. During the day, board game sessions inviting Chomolungma Yamashita from Gujo and woodworking workshops are held, offering programs for children and adults to enjoy. In addition, food and beverage stalls, including flowing somen noodles, add to the festivity. It is a heartwarming event where visitors can experience a serene moment at a mountain temple and a magical evening memorial service enveloped in warm light.
