About this event

The autumn special exhibition 'Unfolding the Toyotomi Clan and Their Battles through Toyokagami,' held at the Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, explores the history of the Toyotomi clan and their battles by delving into 'Toyokagami,' written by Shigetomo Takenaka, son of Hanbei Takenaka (known as Hideyoshi Toyotomi's strategist). Shigetomo Takenaka served Hideyoshi, achieved military distinction during the Battle of Sekigahara by capturing Yukinaga Konishi (a prominent Western Army commander), and contributed to the postwar reconstruction of Sekigahara. Through the perspective of Shigetomo, who lived through this turbulent life, this exhibition introduces the rise and fall of the Toyotomi clan and the nature of the battles at the time. Major exhibits include 'Toyokagami' (formerly in the collection of Razan Hayashi), a portrait of Hanbei Shigeharu Takenaka, a letter by Hideyoshi Hashiba, a tachi sword attributed to Hidenaga Toyotomi (inscribed 'Ichi'), and a newly discovered folding screen depicting the Bunroku and Keicho invasions of Korea. Related events will also be held, such as a lecture focusing on Hidenaga Toyotomi's family and slide presentations by museum curators.
