About this event
Heralding the arrival of autumn in Nakafurano Town, the 'Nakafurano Shrine Annual Grand Festival' is held every year from September 4 to 6. On the first day, September 4, as the Yoimiya-sai eve festival, the dedication and installation of the large sacred straw rope (Oshimenawa) takes place from 2:00 PM. On September 5, during the Hon-sai main festival, the Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine procession) begins at 9:30 AM, parading through the town accompanied by Tsugaru Shishi-mai (deer-lion dance) and Aoi Taiko drumming. In particular, the Chigo Gyoretsu procession, where lovely children march dressed in traditional ceremonial attire, is one of the festival's splendid highlights. On September 6, during the Gojitsu-sai concluding festival, the Ubuko-sai ceremony centering on infants under 1 year of age is performed. This annual festival takes place at the historic Nakafurano Shrine, said to have been founded in 1901 (Meiji 34), with nearby sightseeing spots such as Farm Tomita and Hokuseiyama Lavender Field.
