About this event

A performance by the Higashishirakawa Village Kabuki Preservation Society commemorating the 50th anniversary of the revival of Ji-Kabuki. Inheriting the tradition of Ji-Kabuki, which took root as local entertainment in the Edo period, a wide range of generations from elementary school students to seniors participate and deliver passionate performances. In addition to authentic Ji-Kabuki performances, the event features stage sets crafted by local village carpenters and displays of stage curtains from historic theater playhouses. Food and product stalls offering local village specialties will also be present, providing an opportunity to fully enjoy the region's charm. As population decline and a shortage of successors continue, this commemorative performance is positioned as an important turning point for passing down the tradition of Ji-Kabuki to the next 50 years. Ukon Onoe has been appointed as honorary advisor, and his encouragement of the activities is also anticipated.
