Kobo Daishi Dedicatory Fireworks Festival
Japanese name:弘法大師奉納花火大会
📅 Fri, Aug 21, 2026
About this event
Held annually on August 21 in the Shuzenji Onsen hot spring district of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the "Kobo Daishi Dedicatory Fireworks Festival" is notable for fireworks launched from an elevated location on the mountain behind Shuzenji Temple. Launching from midway up a mountain is rare in Japan, offering a unique visual spectacle. The fireworks, beautifully visible from anywhere in the hot spring town, are held to express gratitude to Kobo Daishi (Kukai), who is said to have founded Shuzenji Onsen about 1,200 years ago during the Heian period, and is affectionately known locally as "O-Kobo-san." Along the valley of the Katsura River, ryokan inns and eateries line the streets, creating a charming townscape with preserved historic buildings. Starmine displays and message fireworks illuminate the night sky, and the approximately 70-meter-long Niagara Falls fireworks set across the Katsura River for the finale is a must-see. The reflection of fireworks on the river surface creates an enchanting atmosphere. On the day of the event, numerous street stalls line the grounds and approach to Shuzenji Temple, creating a lively scene. Since there is no parking available, the use of public transportation is recommended. In the event of severe weather, it may be postponed to the following day or a few days later.
