About this event

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, an opening event will be held at Asahi Waterfall, a famous waterfall located in Ohira, Izu City, known as the birthplace of the classical shakuhachi piece "Taki Ochi no Kyoku" (Music of the Falling Waterfall). Boasting a 105-meter drop, Asahi Waterfall is known as a geosite of the Izu Peninsula Geopark and has deep ties to the shakuhachi. At the opening, following a greeting by the Mayor of Izu, three shakuhachi players—Zempo Shimura, Christopher Yohmei, and Akihito Obama—will perform a comparative recital of "Taki Ochi no Kyoku." It will be a special time that can only be experienced here, where the sound of the waterfall overlaps with the timbre of the shakuhachi. After the performance, an illumination of Asahi Waterfall is scheduled, allowing visitors to enjoy the magical appearance of the waterfall, distinct from its daytime look, along with the sound of the shakuhachi. This event is a valuable opportunity to experience the rich nature of Izu and the living culture of shakuhachi history.
