About this event

The Koine Tiger Dance, held in Minamiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a traditional performing art conducted as a festival ritual of Kinomiya Shrine on the night of the 14th day of the 8th lunar month each year. This tiger dance adapts a portion of The Battles of Coxinga, written by the Edo-period playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon, enacting the storyline where the Chinese hero Watonai encounters a giant tiger in a bamboo grove and captures it alive after a fierce struggle. The heroic depiction of the tiger subjugation captivates all who watch. Designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Shizuoka Prefecture, this tiger dance is a precious opportunity to experience local history and culture. Please enjoy the powerful tiger-taming dance performed on the eve of the harvest moon.
