About this event
This special exhibition explores the history of the Matsudaira clan, the ancestors of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded the Edo shogunate and brought about an era of peace. While the Matsudaira were local gentry in the mountainous area of Mikawa during the time of the first head, Chikauji, they advanced into Iwazu during the reigns of the second head, Yasuchika, and the third head, Nobumitsu, expanding their sphere of activity to Omi and Kyoto while deepening their ties with the Muromachi shogunate. The third head, Nobumitsu, founded Banshoji Temple, Shinkomyoji Temple, and Myoshinji Temple, acquired key areas in western Mikawa such as Okazaki and Anjo based in Iwazu, and established branch families across various regions with his illegitimate sons. This series of moves became the foundation for the Matsudaira clan's survival leading up to Ieyasu. Centering on precious local historical materials, including the Important Cultural Property ridge plaque (munafuda) of Shinkomyoji Temple, this special exhibition delves deeply into the brilliant history and significance of the Iwazu Matsudaira clan.
