About this event
Held annually at Miyamichi Tenjin Shrine in Toyokawa City, the "Amagoi Matsuri" (Rainmaking Festival) is a traditional event originating from legends of rainmaking rituals that saved the region from drought during the Edo period. The highlight of the festival is a gorgeous Kabuki procession performed by local residents dressed as courtesans (oiran), samurai, and other figures, parading through the atmospheric historical streets of Akasaka-juku on the old Tokaido highway. Starting with the early-morning Okumiyasai ritual, a diverse array of events unfolds over two days, including the Yoimiyasai, Grand Festival, mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, and the Kabuki procession. The Oiran Dochu (courtesan procession) in particular is popular among photography enthusiasts, evoking scenes of Edo-period travelers. Blending solemn Shinto rituals with lively community-driven processions, it has become a summer tradition that deepens local bonds. Floats and festival music also enliven the festival, making it a representative regional summer event that combines historical Shinto rites and festivities.
