About this event

Held every year on the third Sunday of October at Takakura Shrine in Hirakuchi-cho, Nishio City, the 'Tengu Festival' is a relatively new festival that began in 1984 (Showa 59) upon the completion of Mikawa Dai-Tengudo, which houses a 1.65-meter-tall Great Tengu. The highlight of the festival is the Great Tengu portable shrine (mikoshi) carried by men in their unlucky ages (yakudoshi) dressed in red attire wearing red masks. The powerful portable shrine parades through the neighborhood. Rice cake tossing (mochimaki) is also held to entertain participants. This festival is held to pray for people's wishes, such as academic success, marital harmony, and traffic safety. Its charm lies in the opportunity to experience the festival's origins and traditions rooted in the community.
