International Exchange Festival - Samulnori
Japanese name:国際交流フェスティバル~サムルノリ
📅 Sun, Aug 23, 2026
About this event
This festival allows visitors to enjoy "Samulnori," a traditional Korean percussion music genre, performed by "Noripan." In Korean, "Samul" means four objects/instruments and "Nori" means playing. The metal percussion instrument "kkwaenggwari" represents lightning, the "jing" represents wind, the "janggu" represents rain, and the "buk" (barrel drum) represents clouds, portraying scenes of nature with lively rhythms. The performing group "Noripan" was founded in 1985 seeking opportunities to engage with Korean Peninsula culture, and Japanese members have also joined to study percussion and dance. Having encountered Samulnori and janggu, they continue to focus primarily on nongak (farmers' music) and also host workshops. Their repertoire has expanded from Samulnori and nongak to traditional Korean dance, with Korean and Japanese members enjoying learning together.
