About this event
Hana Matsuri (Flower Festival) is a traditional folk performing arts festival handed down in the Oku-Mikawa region. Held during the 11th month of the lunar calendar (around November in modern times)—a period when human spirits and bodies are believed to be at their weakest—it is an "umare-kiyomari" (rebirth and purification) ritual where deities and buddhas are invited to a ritual dance ground called mainiwa, and villagers commune and celebrate together with them to be reborn renewed. Various dances are performed all through the night, including the lovely "Hana no Mai" (Flower Dance) by children, as well as the "Yamamioni" and "Sakakioni" where demons wearing giant masks dance wielding long halberds. The exciting time spent singing, drinking, dancing, and being together with the gods will surely be an unforgettable and moving experience. The festival venue is located at Miyanojima, Sakauba, Toyone Village, Kitashitara District, Aichi Prefecture, adjacent to Roadside Station Green Port Miyashima (Michi-no-Eki Green Port Miyashima). Parking is also available. It is held annually from the fourth Saturday to Sunday in November.
