About this event
This fireworks display marks the finale of the "Waraji Festival" held in Shima City, Mie Prefecture. In the "Waraji Festival," which is designated as an intangible cultural property, local children serve as chigo (sacred children) to perform the "Waraji-hiki" (straw sandal pulling) ritual, after which the straw sandal is carried to the beach and set adrift into the sea to pray for safety at sea and a bountiful catch. As the festival's climax, approximately 1,000 fireworks are launched from Nakiri Fishing Port, coloring the sea surface and the night sky. In particular, the starmines lighting up the ocean surface are a must-see. Besides this fireworks display, visitors can enjoy various other festival events such as portable shrines (mikoshi) and the procession of dancers.
