About this event
This summer Bon Odori event has been passed down through generations by local residents on the grounds of Hiyoshi Shrine in Kora Town, Shiga Prefecture. In 2026, it is scheduled to be held on August 21. Signaled by the sound of taiko drums, local residents from children to adults dance together in a circle, filled with a warm sense of unity unique to satoyama villages that is distinct from large festivals in urban areas. Another charm of this festival is that you can actually join the circle and experience the dance forms passed down across generations. As event hours may vary depending on the year, it is best to check local bulletin boards or announcements on the day. Bugs increase at night, so do not forget insect repellent. The festival atmosphere is at its best from around 17:00 when the taiko drums begin to echo, until dusk when the lanterns are lit.
