About this event
Held in the area of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi, 'Jinaimachi Four Seasons Story 2026 "Summer" 23rd Tondabayashi Jinaimachi Lantern Road' is a magical late-summer tradition that illuminates the historic townscape of Jinaimachi, with medieval history breathing since about 460 years ago, using about 1,000 lanterns and lantern stands made from Minamikawachi bamboo. While strolling through the townscape enveloped in subtle, profound, and hopeful light, visitors can enjoy the event, which also includes prayers for the end of COVID-19. At dusk, handmade lanterns crafted by local residents, shops, and kindergarten children are lit, captivating visitors with the tasteful scenery. The event features a wide variety of activities including Mido Lantern Road, Bamboo Lanterns, Evening of Utai Chanting, Goldfish Swimming in Space, Strolling Lantern Road in Yukata, Sparkling Carousel of Light, Lantern Concert in Jodaiji Temple, Kirameki Wonder Stamp Rally, Kirameki Summer Fair, Children's Fair, Manhole Stamp Rally, Crime Prevention Campaign, and Hapinan's Hapi Hapi Festival, with many local shops opening stalls to offer food, beverages, miscellaneous goods, and festival games. Special public viewing of the 'Otokonoma Fusuma-e' (sliding screen paintings in the grand alcove) at the Important Cultural Property Former Sugiyama Family Residence and yukata rentals will also be held as collaborating events. The scenery of the townscape illuminated by lanterns is breathtaking, and since the area in front of Tondabayashi Koshoji Betsuin temple, the starting point of Jinaimachi, will be closed to vehicle traffic, visitors can take their time strolling and taking photos.
