Japanese name:大谿川納涼灯篭流し
📅 Fri, Aug 21, 2026
About this event
Held every year in late August on the Otani River flowing through Yushima, Kinosaki-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, the "Otani River Cooling Lantern Floating" is an atmospheric event to mark the end of summer. By writing drawings or wishes on lanterns, lighting them, and floating them down the Otani River, you can enjoy the magical spectacle of countless lights floating on the river's surface. This event is beloved as a summer tradition in the hot spring town of Kinosaki Onsen, offering visitors a serene and moving experience. Lantern floating paper is sold in advance (9:00 to 17:00) at the Kinosaki Onsen Tourist Center and the Kinosaki Literary Museum, and on-site at the Lantern Floating Reception (near the Kitanayanagi-dori special venue, from 18:30 until supplies run out); both cost 500 yen. However, if advance tickets sell out, there will be no on-site sales. Traffic restrictions will be in effect on the day, so it is recommended to arrive with plenty of time. Municipal and private parking lots are available in the onsen town.
