16th Izushi Eirakukan Kabuki

At the Izushi Eirakukan, the oldest surviving playhouse in the Kinki region built during the Meiji period, a Kabuki performance will be held again this year featuring Kamigata Kabuki star actor Kataoka Ainosuke as the troupe leader. Held annually since the commemorative reopening performance in 2008 (Heisei 20), this production marks its 16th edition this year. This production features elaborate programming, including presenting different plays for the day and evening sessions for the first time, as well as swapping cast roles for identical plays across the sessions. A particular highlight is the dance piece "Ninin Fuji Musume" performed during the evening session; since Izushi Eirakukan served as a filming location for the movie "Kokuho", audiences can watch the very dance featured in the movie live on stage in the actual location just like on screen. Izushi Eirakukan is among the smallest theaters in Japan, offering an overwhelming sense of realism where you can even feel the actors' breathing—an ultra-close-range Kabuki experience unique to this venue. Performers include Kataoka Ainosuke, Bando Shingo, Nakamura Utanosuke, Bando Hikosaburo, and others.
