About this event
This is a retrospective exhibition of Kinji Kawabata, a Western-style painter from Tanba City. It focuses on his mentor-disciple relationships and his activities during his student days. Kinji Kawabata was born in 1909 (Meiji 42) in Kaibara, Kaibara-cho, Hikami-gun (now Tanba City), Hyogo Prefecture, and entered Hyogo Prefectural Kaibara Junior High School (now Kaibara High School) in 1924 (Taisho 13). He demonstrated his talent from a young age, winning a prize for his submission "Kaibara Scenery" in a painting exhibition hosted by the Asahi Shimbun in 1928 (Showa 3), and having "Kaibara Castle Town" selected for the Prefectural Art Exhibition in 1929 (Showa 4). In 1932 (Showa 7), he entered the Western Painting Department of Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), studying under prominent painters such as Itaru Tanabe and Takeji Fujishima. This exhibition focuses on Kinji Kawabata's early activities and this important period that led to his subsequent painting career, exploring the origins of his art.
