Festival

Yumura Fire Festival

Japanese name:湯村の火祭り

📅 Mon, Aug 24, 2026

📍 Shinonsen, Hyogo

About this event

Children surround both banks of the Haruki River flowing through the Yumura Onsen town, swinging torches (currently torch sticks) to the chanting chant: "Jiironbo, taaronbo, muugi no naaka no kuuronbo". Using fire taken from the goma fire ritual held at a nearby temple, this traditional summer night event prays to burn away various evils, wash them away with water, and achieve a purified heart. The contrast between fire and darkness creates a distinctive atmosphere. Torch sticks are also available for rent to tourists, allowing them to participate together. This festival prays to burn away agitated spirits and mental afflictions to achieve a pure mind. The chant "Jiironbo, taaronbo" is thought to originate from tengu enshrined at Tenmangu Shrine on Mt. Hira and Atago Shrine in Kyoto; since the festival date is August 24, a deep connection to rituals at both shrines is inferred. "Muugi no naaka no kuuronbo" may refer to wheat having been used as material for the torches, or may have been words praying for an abundant harvest in the following year.
