Held annually on the Sunday immediately before "Sports Day," the Shimo-Atagi Shrine Annual Grand Festival is a traditional festival held in Hidakagawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture. After banners dedicated by each district are placed in the shrine grounds, powerful dedicated sumo matches (hono sumo) are held. This festival is a precious opportunity for local people to gather and experience culture and traditions passed down from ancient times.
