About this event

The exhibition "130th Anniversary of Birth: Kanji Maeda – Poesie and Realism: 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the 1930 Association" at the Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art is a large-scale retrospective celebrating the 130th birth anniversary of Western-style painter Kanji Maeda (1896–1930), who was active in the prewar Western painting scene, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the "1930 Association" in which he was involved. The exhibition introduces a diverse collection of works combining the poetic sensibility and unique theory of realism pursued by Kanji Maeda, who died young. In addition, works by fellow association members such as Katsuzo Satomi and Yuzo Saeki are also on display, allowing visitors to experience the passion of painters of that era who aimed to create new oil paintings. Through this exhibition, visitors can look back on the depth of Kanji Maeda's artistic career and an important chapter in modern Japanese Western-style painting history.
