About this event

This event is organized by the "Higanbana Festival Executive Committee", formed in 2007 by local residents seeking to utilize approximately 3 hectares of wild red spider lilies growing naturally in the Kuragi Toshimitsu district of Yoshika Town for regional revitalization. Held since 2008, it has become one of the major events in Yoshika Town. The festival takes place over the two days of Saturday and Sunday closest to September 23, the autumn equinox, attracting approximately 2,000 visitors each year from outside the town and prefecture. At the venue, 6 to 8 stalls offering proud flavors made with local products are set up, and entertainments such as local Iwami Kagura, band performances, and song shows are also held, delighting visiting guests. Even outside the festival period, during the approximately two weeks when the red spider lilies are at their peak viewing time, around 300 total visitors, including individual photographers and group bus tours, are expected. Photographers from Hiroshima Prefecture are especially numerous, with not a few visiting multiple times each year. Exchanges with people from outside the region are also deepening through the red spider lilies. The venue and parking facilities receive tremendous support from local residents, allowing for a wonderful festival to be held. On the day of the festival, junior high school groups and local youth groups help at the stalls, and drawings of red spider lilies created by elementary school students are displayed, among other initiatives aimed at passing on love for the region to the next generation.
