About this event

"Ichiyadake Taikai," a traditional bullfighting custom passed down in Okinoshima Town, Shimane Prefecture, is a historic event said to have started in 1221 to console the Retired Emperor Gotoba. Designated as a Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property, bull wrestling (ushitsuki) is said to have originated from matching draft bulls against each other on Oki Island in the past. This "Ichiyadake Taikai" corresponds to the final tournament day (senshuraku) of the three honbasho tournaments held annually, drawing many spectators as a bustling year-end conclusion. Characterized by being held outdoors, it takes place at the bull wrestling arena located opposite the worship hall (haiden) of Ichiyadake Shrine on Mount Dakesan. The dynamic sight of bulls locking horns and wrestling powerfully is a rare spectacle that can be seen in only a few places across Japan. Amidst the mild October climate, it is cherished as an autumn tradition on Oki Island.
