About this event

This is a traditional festival rooted in the history of the Edo and Genroku eras over 300 years ago, passed down in Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture. Recreating the triumphal return of Lord Nagaharu Seki, the first feudal lord of the Niimi Domain, the procession is conducted while faithfully inheriting the customs of the era. Because spectators follow a unique etiquette rule of sitting down or lowering their posture without moving around while the procession passes, it is also known as the "Dogeza Festival" (Prostration Festival). On the preceding day, the "Yutate Shinto Ritual" is performed as an eve celebration of the autumn festival, which is handed down as a ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest and good health while also divining the year's fortunes. At Funakawa Hachiman Shrine, brewing unrefined sake (doburoku) is permitted—a rare privilege nationwide—and this doburoku is also served. The Sacred Procession of Weapons travels back and forth between Funakawa Hachiman Shrine and the temporary resting site (otabisho), advancing in the order of the vanguard (daimyo procession), the portable shrine (mikoshi), and the rearguard (traditional festival music band). On the day, sales of local specialty goods, fair stalls, and workshops are also held, creating regional vibrancy.
