Japanese name:堀川すなお展 目の前にあるもののかたち

📍 Nagi, Okayama

About this event

This exhibition introduces artworks by artist Sunao Horikawa, who continues creating while confronting the fundamental question: "How can the form of things directly in front of our eyes be depicted as a painting?" While taking everyday items we see in daily life—such as mandarins and bananas—as motifs, rather than depicting them realistically, the artist observes and draws through unique experimental methods such as exploring shapes by hand touch or seeking images of objects using words as clues. In recent years, Horikawa has also engaged in attempts to incorporate methods of "observation and depiction" cultivated in non-art fields such as illustrated reference books and maps into painting. This exhibition widely showcases works ranging from these experimental attempts to past creations. Viewers can appreciate a body of work that approaches the essence of observation and perception, exploring what kind of "shape" various information emitted by objects takes within visual painterly expression, and how viewers can perceive it. During the exhibition period, artist talks and workshops offering drawing experiences through the artist's perspective and methods will also be held.
