About this event

Known as the "Sacred Land of Yakitori," Nagato City in Yamaguchi Prefecture will host the "West Japan Yakitori Festival 2026," gathering famous local yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) specialty shops from across western Japan. As Nagato City's largest summer event, it promotes the food culture and charm of Nagato City—one of Japan's six major yakitori towns—to the entire country. At the venue, visitors can not only taste distinct local styles of yakitori from various regions, but also visit adjacent booths promoting local specialty products. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Omijima Island's designation as a scenic spot this year, the festival adopts the theme "The Sea and Yakitori," aiming to enhance the appeal of local products and tourism and contribute to community revitalization. In addition, the regional tradition of "mochimaki" (rice cake throwing) will be held, passing down cultural heritage to children through the festival while preparations proceed with great care so every single day can be enjoyed by all visitors. Furthermore, ahead of the festival, the period from August 10 to September 13 is designated as "Yakitori Day" Campaign Month under the slogan "Sa, Iko" (Let's Go!), featuring a participatory event where ordering yakitori at participating shops allows customers to draw a "Yakitori Lottery." As Nagato City's biggest summer event, it is a great opportunity to savor delicious yakitori while experiencing the region's charm.
