About this event

The 12th Special Exhibition "Kosonte and Ruunpe," held at the National Ainu Museum, explores the Ainu ceremonial attire "kosonte" and the design world woven from textiles. The name "kosonte" originates from "kosode," the prototype of the kimono; kosode worn by samurai women from Honshu transformed into ritual attire for men within Ainu culture. Furthermore, the fabrics were utilized in patterns and decorations called "ruunpe," being reborn into new garments. This exhibition focuses on the variety of fabrics and threads used, the choice of materials, color combinations, and the unique sensibility and creativity of each maker invested in crafting the patterns. Through kosonte and ruunpe, the exhibition introduces the diverse world of fashion born from interactions between the Ainu and Honshu, while conveying the depth of techniques and expressions passed down to the present day.
