About this event

Held at the Yoshida Family Residence in Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture, 'Hikari-bori Exhibition in Udatsu: From the Land of Awa and Yoshino River to the Vast Ocean' is an art exhibition using 'Hikari-bori' (light carving), a unique technique created by light artist Fuu Yurukawa. By carving insulation materials and illuminating them from behind, this technique brings out images hidden within the material. Fusing with the historical Japanese architecture of the Yoshida Family Residence, it creates an experience where not only the imagery, but also the depth, light, and shadow of the building become one. In this exhibition, 10 to 13 pieces will be on display, including new works themed around Tokushima indigo, the Yoshino River, and the vast ocean. Fantastic light art emerges within the Yoshida Family Residence, which conveys the history of indigo merchants to the present day. In addition, a collaborative performance with Japanese classical dancer Sansai Wakayagi will be held during this exhibition. Stories set in Tokushima, Japanese classical dance, biwa lute, storytelling, and light carving will intertwine, creating a special time inside the Yoshida Family Residence that differs from the regular exhibition. Please take this opportunity to experience the world of Hikari-bori that can only come to life at the Yoshida Family Residence as part of your autumn journey through Tokushima and the Udatsu streetscape.
