About this event
The Uwatsuhiko Shrine Autumn Festival is a traditional autumn festival held in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture. The highlights of the festival are the procession led by the 'Ushioni' (ox demon), which parades vigorously while shaking its head to the sound of bamboo trumpets blown by children, and the gorgeous mikoshi (portable shrines) parading through the city. In addition, the 'Yatsushika Odori' (Eight Deer Dance), where young boys sing and dance to the rhythm of small drums, is dedicated to the gods. This Yatsushika Odori is a folk performing art that has been passed down in the Uwajima region since ancient times, boasting a tradition of over 330 years. Held at Uwatsuhiko Shrine, the total guardian shrine of the Uwajima castle town, this festival expresses gratitude to the deities and offers an opportunity to deeply experience the local traditional culture. The Yoimiya Festival (eve of the festival) and the Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine procession) are also held, bustling with local residents and tourists.
