About this event

This exhibition is the first in Japan to introduce a select collection of Indian chintz gathered by Karun Thakar, one of the world's foremost collectors. Originating in India thousands of years ago, chintz was exported worldwide as a major trade item and influenced lifestyles across various regions. Based on this precious collection of chintz gathered from the 13th to 19th centuries, the exhibition traces the impact of Indian chintz on the world. It introduces how Indian chintz was received and transformed in various places, maintaining its own aesthetic sense while developing diverse designs according to requests from other countries as it traveled globally. Through approximately 60 items—including a 7.7-meter-long chintz made for the domestic Indian market, diverse chintz created to meet demand across Asia and Europe, and materials conveying the reception and development of chintz in Japan—the exhibition showcases its multifaceted charm. It allows visitors to enjoy the history, spread, and enduring allure of Indian chintz that continues to fascinate people worldwide.
