About this event
Marking the grand finale of the Saijo Festival, the Iizumi Shrine Festival features the dedication of 11 gorgeous taikodai (drum floats) adorned with gold and silver threads. Early in the morning on the 17th, the miyadashi (departure of the portable shrines and floats) takes place, followed by 'kakikurabe' (float-lifting contests) held sequentially at four locations. The gold thread embroidery decorations shining under the sunlight and the vigorously swaying pure silk tassels complement the heroic movements of the taikodai, creating a magnificent spectacle. In the evening before the miyairi (shrine entry), a kakikurabe featuring the 11 taikodai and the mikoshi (portable shrine) is held on the riverbed in front of Iizumi Shrine. Unseen in other regions, this kakikurabe brings the taikodai close together in a straight line of 11 floats to hoist them simultaneously into the air, and its heroic and magnificent appearance is the true highlight unique to the Iizumi Shrine Festival.
