About this event
The "Nonaka Festival," a traditional event that colors summer in Tosa Town, began in honor of the achievements of Nonaka Kenzan, a chief retainer who supported agriculture in the Tosa Domain during the Edo period. Nonaka Kenzan constructed an overflow weir (arai-seki) in Tosa Town and developed irrigation channels that brought vital water to the rice fields in the Mori area. This festival celebrates the fact that these irrigation waterways remain part of the town's landscape today and serve as a source of local pride. As the festival that wraps up the end of summer in Tosa Town, the Nonaka Festival draws many visitors each year and fosters a sense of local unity. During festival preparations, activities like ground maintenance and the setup of stages (yagura) and tents take place, allowing participants to interact with locals and experience the region's charm firsthand. During the main event, draft beer is served, and local residents and visitors come together to celebrate the end of summer. A social gathering with local staff is also held after the festival, allowing participants to further deepen their connections with the community.
