Japanese name:櫻井神社 流鏑馬(新嘗祭)
📅 Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
This is the only Yabusame (horseback archery) ritual in Itoshima, dedicated during the Niinamesai harvest ritual of Sakurai Shrine. Along an approximately 150-meter approach path, three targets measuring about 50 cm square are set up, and two samurai warriors shoot white-feathered arrows at the targets while galloping past on horseback. Dedicated for about 390 years since around 1635 to pray for the safety of farm horses, the traditional event currently features the Yabusame ritual and a children's procession (Chigo Gyoretsu). Viewing is free of charge, and no advance reservation is required. Parking is available, but the use of public transportation is recommended as congestion is expected. Please check the shrine's latest updates regarding the start time.
