About this event

The autumn grand festival "Hojoe" is held annually on both October 15 and 16 at Umi Hachimangu Shrine, which is well known as a deity of safe childbirth and child rearing. This festival is a traditional event to cherish all life born into this world, prohibit the taking of life, express gratitude for being given life, and pray for bountiful harvests. During the festival, "Umi Kagura," a Fukuoka Prefecture-designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is performed at the Kagura-den hall, captivating hearts with its refined dances set to the sounds of flutes and drums and its mythological narrations. Concurrently, a commerce and industry festival organized by the local town chamber of commerce is held, featuring sales of local specialty goods and approximately 100 street stalls lined up each year, bustling with many worshippers.
