Karatsu Castle Keep 60th Anniversary Event: Kanreki Celebration - Sky Lantern Festival

About this event

In 2026, Karatsu Castle Keep reaches a major milestone: its 60th anniversary of construction. Treating this commemorative year as its "Kanreki" (60th birthday), the "Kanreki Celebration: Karatsu Castle Sky Lantern Festival" will be held to celebrate Karatsu Castle's 60th anniversary alongside citizens and visitors celebrating their own 60th birthdays. The event draws inspiration from Karatsu Castle's alternate name "Maizuru Castle" (Dancing Crane Castle) and the image of "cranes = longevity," releasing sky lanterns inscribed with wishes for family and loved ones into the night sky. In addition, fireworks will be launched in tandem with the sky lanterns, creating a fantastical spectacle of red lanterns and fireworks illuminating the night sky. This provides a special experience fitting for the 60th anniversary of Karatsu Castle Keep. Event admission and viewing are free, but advance registration is required to launch a sky lantern. The Sky Lantern Plan includes 1 sky lantern, a 60th anniversary commemorative castle stamp (gojoin), and Karatsu Castle Keep admission. A free invitation plan is also available for those turning 60 years old.
