About this event

The Takeo Onsen Autumn Festival is centered around the Takeo Yabusame (horseback archery), which boasts an 840-year tradition. It is said to have originated in 1186 (Bunji 2) as an offering of gratitude by Minamoto no Yoritomo after being encouraged by a white heron serving as a messenger of Takeo Shrine when praying for victory in battle. On the day of the festival, the Yabusame procession (Nobori-uma and Kudari-uma), Shinto rituals, horse inspection (Baba-mise), and ceremonial archery (Hoshabun) will take place in front of the Takeo City Library and Historical Museum, showcasing graceful traditional performing arts. Additionally, on the eve of the festival, the 'Yoi no Matsuri (Eito)' will be held from Amagu to Takeo Shrine and back to Amagu, reenacting the delivery of tribute items to Takeo Shrine during the imperial envoy's visit in 1186. Furthermore, the 54th Citizens' Tug-of-War Tournament and children's portable shrines (kodomo mikoshi) will also take place, making it a lively autumn festival uniting the entire community. Traffic regulations and parking information associated with the Yabusame dedication are also provided.
