About this event
The special exhibition 'Gensuke Mine, Astronomer of the Omura Domain — Observing the Heavens and Accomplishing Duties (A Samurai Who Watched the Sky and Lived Through an Era)' held at the Omura City Historical Museum introduces the life of Gensuke Mine, an astronomer of the Omura Domain who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. After studying calendrical astronomy at the Shogunate Astronomical Observatory, Gensuke Mine served as the astronomer of the Omura Domain and was engaged in surveying and drafting from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji era. Centering on astronomical and geographical materials handed down in the Mine family, this exhibition displays Ino maps, star charts, surveying instruments, astronomy books, and newly discovered historical documents related to the Shogunate Astronomical Observatory. It is an opportunity to deeply learn through valuable materials about Gensuke Mine's attitude of 'observing the heavens' and his footprints as a samurai who lived through turbulent times.
